Children's Books to Support Impulse Control

Being in control of our actions is a skill. Sometimes we follow our plan, we blurt out, we act out, and the people around us might feel uncomfortable. Teaching our children and students how to be in control of their bodies, and giving them the tools and strategies they need to do this in multiple social situations, is crucial.

These are some of my favorite books to support impulse control in various environments and social interactions that your students or children may find themselves in.

Have you ever felt that pang of frustration when someone interrupts your story? That feeling of wanting to be HEARD and respected in that moment?

Kids feel that same way in our classrooms. The simple act of letting them finish their thoughts, ideas, and experiences without others interjecting goes a LONG way. Teaching INTO self-awareness and impulse control skills can make all the difference!

Let Me Finish! Book Cover

Julia Cook

This book is still one of my absolute favorite books to use at the beginning of the year, reinforce in the middle of the year, and review at the end of each school year! It ties in perfectly with all things Social Thinking and holding up visuals of a Thinking bubble and a Talking bubble WHILE you’re reading, modeling, and having your kiddos model and practice, will be the PERFECT way to start your school year!

I Can't Believe You Said That! Book Cover

I'm always searching for books that I can use with kiddos grades 3-5, and this is definitely one of my favorites. If you've got kids who enjoy being the center of attention, kids love laughing at their jokes, and everyone reacts ALL DAY LONG, this book is for you.

What Were You Thinking? Book Cover

Whether you have students who blurt out, suddenly show unexpected behaviors, or follow their own plan, these books are a great place to start! We need to teach social and emotional skills, not expect them, and these picture books can support us as we teach our students the skill of impulse control.
