Don't Confuse Placement with Purpose

In the world of education, we often find ourselves at the mercy of circumstances beyond our control. Layoffs, budget cuts, grade level changes, and district reassignments can leave us feeling lost, undervalued, and questioning our purpose in this noble profession. It's a harsh reality that many educators are facing, and it's one that strikes at the very heart of our calling.

Recently, I learned that one of the school districts where our BISON educators work is laying off 300 teachers and counselors at the end of this school year. My heart breaks for these dedicated professionals who have poured their hearts and souls into their students, only to be met with the devastating news that their services are no longer needed. It's a painful reminder of the challenges we face as educators and the toll it can take on our mental and emotional well-being.

This news hits particularly close to home for me, as I was recently contacted by another school district to speak in front of their teachers and district leaders. I met with one of their superintendents, crafted a comprehensive proposal about creating inclusive classrooms, integrating social-emotional learning systems, and providing teachers with the support they need to meet the diverse needs of their students. We had everything in place – dates reserved, invoices sent, and an incredible lineup of speakers, including one of our BISON educators and a mentor teacher.

However, at the last moment, they decided not to move forward with our plan, opting to use an internal staff member instead. This person hadn't implemented these strategies in their own classroom and lacked the skills to engage teachers in a way that made them feel seen, heard, and empowered with actionable tools. It was a decision that left me feeling disappointed and frustrated, knowing that the teachers in that district would not receive the support and guidance they so desperately needed.

These stories are all too common in the world of education, and they speak to a larger issue: the way in which we value and support our educators. When districts make decisions that prioritize budget cuts over teacher well-being, or opt for quick fixes over meaningful professional development, it sends a message that our work is not valued, and our well-being is not a priority.

But I'm here to tell you that your purpose as an educator is not defined by these challenges. Your calling to inspire, nurture, and empower the next generation is a fundamental part of who you are, and it's what drives you to make a difference in the world, no matter what obstacles come your way.

But I want you to know that you are not alone. There is a community of educators out there who understand your struggles, share your passion, and are ready to support you every step of the way.
