The Magic of the BISON Classroom
As a Social Emotional Learning consultant, coach, and mentor, I am always on the lookout for twelve very intentional things that our educators can do that make you go...Ok, there's something different happening in here. I recently flew out to SoCal, and I'm telling you, there were two moments in particular where I stepped into these classrooms and I just KNEW I was witnessing something extraordinary - the epitome of the BISON classroom in action! Intentional Visuals
From the moment you enter these classrooms, you can't help but notice the intentional visuals that not only captivate the eye but also nurture the mind and soul. Every poster, every bulletin board, and every carefully placed object serves a purpose in reinforcing positive behaviors, promoting a sense of community, and igniting a passion for learning.
These visuals weren't just there to look pretty; they served a real purpose in shaping the classroom experience. They were constant reminders of the values and expectations that define what it means to be a BISON.
BISON in Action
Let's talk about the secret sauce that made these classrooms so dang amazing: the BISON framework. If you don't know...yet...BISON stands for "Be Intentional So Others Notice," and let me tell you, it's a game-changer. This approach is all about being proactive, consistent, and purposeful in every single aspect of running your classroom. It's not just about managing behavior; it's about creating an environment where every student is supported with the skills they need to be successful socially, emotionally, academically, and in LIFE.
So, what does the BISON framework look like in action? Here are some of the key things I noticed:

Positive vibes all around! These teachers were masters at recognizing and SELebrating student successes, big and small.
Students were empowered to take the lead and own their learning. They had opportunities to step up, make decisions, and feel valued.
Learning experiences that were engaging, meaningful, and downright unforgettable. No snoozefests in these classrooms!
By embracing the BISON way, these rockstar teachers have created classrooms where students feel like they matter, like they're supported, and like they can conquer the world. It's a beautiful thing to see, and it all starts with being intentional.
The Calm Space: Not a Punishment...but a PROACTIVE solution
Time and time again, we see the power and importance of having a calm space in the classroom. It's like a little haven where students can go to press the reset button when things get overwhelming. And let me tell you, it's not just a trendy idea – it's a total game-changer.
Picture this: a cozy corner of the room, filled with soft pillows, soothing colors, and maybe even a few fidgets. It's a place where students can take a breather, practice some deep breathing, and just be in the moment. When emotions are running high, or the stress of the day is getting to be too much, the calm space is there to provide a much-needed escape.
But the calm space isn't just about giving students a place to chill out. It's also a powerful tool for teaching them how to regulate their emotions and practice mindfulness. And when they're able to regulate their own emotional state, they're better equipped to focus on learning and engage with their peers in a positive way.
